Found a charge for $86 on my credit card account for PAYPALWEBROOTSW with a phone number. This was charged in September but I was suspicious because I had already renewed in June and I don't spend that much for virus protection. According to internet postings, this is a scam. Called credit card company to dispute, then called Paypal, since I can't find the charge on my acct. history. The pleasant woman I spoke with told me that Webroot had charged it based on automatic renewal using an old email address. I haven't used that email address for at least 3 years and have been renewing via my present email address. In addition, she told me that I have 2 accts(!), one linked to the old email address and one linked to the present email address. Since I am disputing the charge, she said she could not cancel the first acct or take any other action to refund my money. Suggested I call Webroot. Called Webroot wondering if I would be able to reach anyone (internet postings stated service was terrible). To my surprise, someone answered immediately and I explained the situation. She offered to refund the money, but once she learned that I had disputed the charge, stated she couldn't do it at this time unless I lifted "the hold" on the charge. I can understand that since it's possible that I might end up being reimbursed twice. Called credit card company again and they agreed to lift the hold and stated they would take care of getting a refund. I think the problem is that Webroot has the automatic renewal and even if you cancel it ahead of time, it often goes into effect anyway. They should monitor this more closely. In my case, I have no idea why they would have billed via an old email address that I never use.
