This charge was for a subscription to a service that allows genealogists to use the internet to view a vast number of old newspapers, finding obituaries, weddings, social columns, and all sorts of printed material which might add information about the individuals whom they are researching. We have had it only for a short while and are delighted with what we've seen.

I took a trial subscription to a site that advertised that they have newspaper archives . I was trying to find information on relatives to supplement Ancestry.com. They billed me once for about $7.00 and I contacted them to cancel. I never got confirmation, so I told my credit union to deny any further payment.

Back in October 2017, I signed up for a 7-day trial of newspapers.com for some genealogical research that I was doing on Ancestry.com. Links to newspapers in the newspapers.com data come up in Ancestry.com. The resource is actually great, but... I cancelled the 7-day trial. All was good. I checked that newspapers.com did not have my CC in my newspapers.com profile. Then starting 12/11/2017, they started trying to charge 74.90 to my CC. I called my CC to report fraud, but they said I should talk with their dispute charges since I did (I think) give newspapers.com my CC for the 7-day trial. I've never had problems with ancestry.com (except it being really expensive), but looks like many have had problems with newspapers.com posting false charges.

This charge is for a subscription to Newspapers.com (a huge archive of newspapers--many from the 1800s) for 6 months. If you want to cancel the automatic renewal, you go to newspapers.com, click on your name in the upper right corner, click on your account, and eventually you will see a place to check if you want your subscription automatically renewed and put on your credit card or if you want to cancel the automatic renewal. I've seen ads from ancestry.com, telling how old newspapers are a good resource. I suspect what happened is that people are clicking something agreeing to a free trial subscription, at the end of which you will start being charged UNLESS YOU CANCEL YOUR SUBSCRIPTION. Ancestry.com must have something on their site that is isn't clear unless you look closely, and people are signing up without meaning to. If you did get this charge, you are subscribed and will get charged again in 6 months, so call them and cancel. If it's been several months, they might not refund your initial charge--if so, use and enjoy the site.

I found this charge after signing up for a "free Trial" with the Los Angeles Times newspaper. I decided not to continue the paper but found a $74.90 charge from ANCnewspapers and the word "Ancestry" was worded on my visa charge. Coley, a rep from ANC, said the first time I talked to him they weren't affiliated with the Los Angeles Times. But after the third email of me repeatedly asking him how he got my credit card, he admitted that the Los Angeles Times was one of their affiliations. So I assume that this fraud company is somehow buying credit cards from the LA Times. The whole thing is highly suspicious. Plus the LA Times tried to charge me as well before I caught them. I am furious! I'd like to hire a lawyer because I hate seeing people robbed. I"d also like to contact the FBI on this.

If you search carefully, you do not need to pay extra for recent news. Ancestry.com provides access to old newspapers through 1923. I responded to an "upgrade" message and gained access to recent newspapers for $59.90 per year. In November of 2019, I realized that may card was being charged every 6 months and three times in November. My account showed that I had an annual subscription. Their phone is all automated. They will respond by email. It was very difficult for them to understand these charges which did not show up on my account. They said that I was charged for a semiannual subscription and for an annual subscription. Then they refunded one charge of $59.95 and cancelled my annual subscription. They also deleted my semiannual account. Now, I cannot prove that I ever had two different accounts. There is no reason for anyone to even think about paying twice as much for a semiannual subscription when the annual is half as much.

ANC*Newspapers.com (with phone number and UT [Utah location] ) shows up on your credit card as a 6-month subscription to Newspapers.com. This service is offered through Ancestry.com, but payment is separate from your Ancestry subscription. Several responses above explained this, and they are correct. If you use Ancestry.com, you must have subscribed to use the newspaper article lookup service. Review your Newspapers.com account online to understand the charge.

This company and it's sister company ancestry.com have compromised my personal data and payment information. Ancestry shared my banking information with newspapers.com. They charged me $74.99 for a newspapers subscription which I did not agree to nor did I share my payment information with. I have tried calling and emailing both in the US and the UK neither resulted in repayment. I have filed fraud charges with my bank and will be filing reports with PayPal and IRS. Ancestry was complacent in their data security and offered no resolve in the matter. DO NOT USE ancestry.com, newspapers.com or any of its subsidiaries. They are not safe or honorable.

Signed up for Ancestry.com several years ago, but cancelled my subscription soon after. They obviously passed my CC number on to anc.newspapers.com which periodically tries to charge $78.65 US to my CC even though I haven't used their 'service' in years. Have had no luck contacting them. All calls go to voicemail and are not returned. They do not respond to emails. Ancestry.com says that they have 'no control' over anc.newspapers.com even though the two are obviously associated with each other. Have previously reported this as fraud and had my CC replaced. Somehow, they got my new CC number and charged me again, twice in the same month, one AFTER I called an left a message asking therm to cease & desist. May have to close down my CC.
