Vending machine charge. Coke machine may pre-authorize a larger amount until it charges the correct amount.
I understand an auth hold of it was 10 - 20 years ago. But now a days? It may have been accepted practice a long time ago but with instant everything is not called for. The banks had a problem with forever ago when you'd try to get $20 gas and it'd place a $100 hold. So to see it today still just means that's not a vendor I'll do business with. To see why it's really done look into how banks borrow from the few real sources of money out there. They make money on interest from these fluid accounts. Sure it may only be a dollar on my $5.50 hold. But how often/rapidly are they making that dollar. What gets refunded back to you is less then what they made falsely propping up false sales data. It's just another game played with money. Think bitcoin is the answer? Do some research. It's convoluted for a reason.
